So so excited to share another collaborative party brought to you from Oh, Sugar! Events and Ryam Teran of The Inspired Mama. The theme this time around was Arabian Nights (or Princess Jasmine, hold the Jasmine). Think teal, deep purple and a shot of magenta with tons of golden glitz and shimmer thrown in for good measure, and a dessert table more concerned with a wide variety of selection than mass quantities. The birthday girl was blown away with all the beautiful details and we think you will be, too. Enjoy!

Samirah's Bazaar featured one jewel encrusted two-tiered birthday cake and four mini chocolate cakes, along with a dazzling array of beautiful sweets. Ryam suggested the tinsel curtains framing our gilded "5" centerpiece, and I have to say I love it! Glittery, fun and unexpected for sure.

Royal Icing Henna Transfers

My partner in crime, Ryam, from The Inspired Mama, and I are throwing a Princess Jasmine inspired party for her soon-to-be five year old, Samirah. We're both not too keen on the whole licensed character bit, so Jasmine will be making a minor appearance in the form of some sugar cookies on the dessert table. So I guess it's really more Arabian Nights than Jasmine we're talking about. In trying to come up with some fresh ideas, I started playing around with henna tattoos and how I could incorporate them into the dessert table. That's when I started making these henna royal icing transfers to use as a major-wow cupcake topper. Below is the surprisingly simple step by step tutorial. Enjoy!

Start with a line drawing of your design. I took an image I'd googled then finessed it to fit the shape and size I needed it.

Place a sheet of wax paper over your paper template and start tracing your design using semi-stiff royal icing in your piping bag fitted with a number 1 tip. Make sure to have some thicker sections for stability. I went over some lines twice to build them up. Also be sure to connect all lines to another point of your design so it is more sturdy when peeling off your wax paper.

Keep building and adding on.

You can use a heat gun to speed drying time.

When completely dry (COMPLETELY - no cheating) begin removing your transfers by slowly peeling back a small section from the wax paper. Don't go too far or the pressure of your fingers are likely to break your work and induce a steady stream of curses.

Using a large offset spatula, slowly start working your design off the wax paper by sliding it under the transfer at the starting point you created by peeling it away from the wax paper. Use a smooth steady motion and watch your spatula to see if it is catching on any of the design elements. This is easier than you might guess. I only had two tragedies and one was completely salvaged by putting the largest chunk back on the wax paper and re-piping the missing part. I just let it dry and removed as described above.

And there you have it. Beautiful lacy royal icing pieces to use as appliques on cakes, or in my case tall, standing cupcake toppers. Obviously, you can pipe in any color you like or take it to the next level and give them the Midas touch:

I love this stuff BUT it's kinda pricy ($9.99 at my cake supply store) and does not go as far as I would like. I chose the spray because I worried about painting with a brush on such a delicate canvas.

How pretty would these be in white used on a pale vintage-inspired lace cake? Hmmm... Think I'll have to add that to the "must try" list.

Operation Cookie

Sometimes the best cure for burn out is to just play. I've been so busy lately with cookie orders and party planning (not complaining, I swear), that it's started to feel a little bit like a grind with little time to enjoy my family. This week I had some downtime and spent it not at the spa, but doing more cookies. Well, one monster cookie to be exact.

I'd had this idea of an Operation inspired cookie for awhile, but wasn't sure how exactly to go about it. I started out with a huge cookie - like 7x12" the biggest one to come out of our oven yet. I wanted the game pieces to be moveable, but wasn't sure exactly how to go about it. Pipe them on mini cookies, perhaps? I didn't want the cookies covering up the red openings so I ultimately just piped the shapes in royal icing on a sheet of wax paper and allowed them to dry before peeling them off. They're way more delicate this way, but it was the exact look I was going for. Loving this blast from the past and the newest member of our Play With Your Food movement. Plenty of detail pics ahead. Cookie Quickie: Monster High Fangs

Here was a request for a quick couple of dozen fangs with pink lips to go along with a Monster High party for the ten year old birthday girl. (I'll admit I had to look up Monster High because I am THAT unhip). These were fast and fun. Enjoy!

Wax Seal Envelope Tutorial

For a Valentine's Day themed birthday party I came up with these simple and pretty valentine envelopes sealed with an edible wax seal. I had so many inquiries on how to do them I thought I'd put together a quick tutorial.

Outline a square cookie using a No. 2 tip.

Pipe the envelope flap and corners.

Flood the side panels and allow to dry.

Next, flood the bottom flap, working the edges to meet up with the dried side sections so they form a nice, clean seam. Allow to dry.

Flood the envelope's top flap to meet the side sections in a clean seam, and allow to dry.

Flood a dime-sized circle in the center where the flaps meet and allow to dry.

Pipe a tiny heart in the center starting with two small dots.

Use a toothpick to drag the centers of the dots together to create the bottom point of your heart.

Pipe a circle around the heart using flood-consistency icing (aim for a more centered circle than I managed to do here). DO NOT allow to dry.

While still wet, work the circle of icing outward in a random, uneven shape to cover the first layer of the yellow icing's edges completely.

Add a few well placed drips and voila! Wax seal. Easy, peasy, mac-and-cheesy.

What a difference a year makes! Here is my first set of cookies done for Valentines day. I remember staying up until three in the morning- little did I know this would be a foreshadowing of many, many late nights to come. This year's set, done in pink and red, is for a dear friend's 2-year old's Valentine themed birthday party.

Yellow and grey. How much to I love this fresh, sophisticated palette? I've been waiting for an opportunity to use it and my dear friend Jo-Ann's baby shower was the perfect choice. My partner in party planning crime, Ryam, along with hostess extraordinaire, Loren and I pulled this intimate gathering together on a limited budget and a short timeframe. Read on for more details about how we did it. Enjoy!

Our dessert table - very pared down. We let fabrics, texture and pattern along with a few stand out sweets make a statement. The sweet lacy backdrops were drapery panels found for a steal at Ikea and our charcoal and white houndstooth runner was a just some pretty cotton yardage from Jo-ann's.

Since we were having a smaller gathering of only sixteen guests, Ryam had the great suggestion that we set a long banquet table instead of separate rounds. We laid out some inexpensive white bedding sheets from Ikea as table cloths and layered it with sweet yellow and white polka dot yardage from Jo-ann's as an inexpensive, no-sew runner. More easy breezy sheers suspended from the pergola.

Another year another birthday for my sweet baby doll. (This is sweet baby doll's cousin rocking the glasses and a mean snarl.) We pulled off a fairy tale party featuring Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf and it was everything I'd hoped for for Abby's fourth birthday. I wanted to share the resources and cost saving tips that went into the details and personal touches that made her party not only beautiful but a ton of fun. Enjoy!

Set the scene: I love to welcome party goers with a little preview of what's in store inside. This chalkboard greeting and wildflowers lining the walkway are a sweet way to welcome guests.

Party themed front door wreath.

This five minute rustic wreath was created using bits and pieces from my favorite resource; The Dollar Tree. Cover a plain Dollar Tree wreath in burlap (left over from the kids' tables) and wrap with a strip of gingham fabric. Arrange some loose moss, faux moss covered stones, red berry sprig and sweet little bird (all Dollar Tree), a pine cone from the park (um, free) in an asymmetrical design, fire up the hot glue gun and affix. Tie a loose gingham bow at the bottom and you've got a sweet little front door welcome for $5.

The Dessert Table

I love to put together a dessert table and because this party was based on the classic fairytale I wanted to somehow incorporate the book in the table design. So I created this wall backdrop by color copying pages from an inexpensive edition of Little Red Riding Hood that had lovely, old-fashioned illustrations on every page. These were attached directly to the wall using removable sticky dots (no wall holes!) picked up in the scrapbooking section of my craft store. Easy, inexpensive and a lot of look for a little cash.

The "Once Upon A Time" scrolling banner is made from hand cut letters (you could also use a Cricut) on three pieces of poster board from the Dollar Tree, which are two for a dollar. Total cost: $2. Again, a little elbow grease and even smaller investment.

The backyard was where all the action was. I've finally given up on the adorable (and ultimately expensive) take home favors that just get left behind on the table (grrrr... don't get me started). Instead, I made these no-sew riding hoods and wolf heads, which did double duty as party decor and take home swag. They really made a huge impact on the space by simply hanging them on clothesline from the pergola.

The kids' tables were covered in sweet red and white gingham and rustic burlap runners with mason jar centerpieces using flowers from Trader Joe's (my favorite floral supplier!). Kids lunches were individually packed in picnic baskets (Dollar Tree) lined in contrasting fabric from Jo-Ann's. Red, white and polka dot balloons and handmade pennant banners finished off the space and really gave it that sweet, old-fashioned feel.

Now on to the fun. This is where I get a little anxious. Because the bulk of my energy and time goes into what the party looks like, I tend to pay less attention to the fun factor. Then I start to freak. Do I HAVE to have a bounce house? If I don't, what will the kids do for fun? If we have games, will they participate? Who's going to MC? What if we run out of things to do? Oy. The pressure. I decided against the bouncer (the birthday girl's not a big fan plus they overrun the entire backyard) so here's what we came up with instead:

Abby's playhouse has an adorable tiny kitchen and rocking chair and it gets little-to-no action all year long. Fortunately, her party guests are less jaded. We slapped a "Grandma's House" sign above the front door and let the kids run wild in and around it.

Scattered fake food for scavenger hunt.

After lunch we held a scavenger hunt, scattering tons of plastic food (from the toy department at Ross - two 84-piece sets at $14.99 a pop) all over the backyard in plain sight. They used their picnic baskets to "Pack a Picnic for Grandma" and collected as many fake french fries and ice cream cones as they could lay their tiny hands on. No winners, no losers, just super simple and super fun! The kids loved it!

Onto the craft portion of our party. I saw these packages of Dollar Tree foam flowers when it came to me: Make Grandma a Bouquet of Wildflowers. Each flower was hot glued to a wooden craft store dowel painted green, which then had a foam leaf slid onto each stem. (Leaves were cut from the unused green foam flowers, yielding 5 per flower.)

These plain flowers were "planted' in the yard for the kids to pick and then take to the craft table to decorate with curled pipe cleaners, foam flower shapes, pom poms and glitter glue (all from The Dollar Tree). I was nervous about this one because past craft tables have gone completely ignored, but the kids were totally into it. Maybe the lack of a bounce house had something to do with their interest? Either way - Hooray! Success!

Now THAT is a wildflower!

One of my all time favorite elements at the party - the photo booth! Hang a boldly patterned or colorful curtain and set up a stool for your subjects to sit and strike pose. Have a basket stocked with silly props and costumes and encourage the kids to ham it up. Cheap, easy and makes for sensational photo ops.

How much do I love a good old fashioned sack race? SO much!

I originally wanted to play musical chairs, but the kids are so competitive right now (and such poor losers!) that I didn't want to risk the tears that might ensue, so I thought the sack race would be a good alternative. And yes, I wussed out again with no winners or losers. Just get yourself across the finish line. And you know, the kids didn't even care.

These great red and white striped sacks were purchased from our local party supply store for a great price - half a dozen for $5.99.

And because I'm a glutton for punishment I thought we'd take another swing (get it? swing?) at a birthday pinata for a grand finale. I couldn't find a wolf pinata at our party supply so I had to make do with this pony one. Slap a wolf mask on him and voila! Good enough!

And like all pinatas, apparently, this one was made out of concrete and was totally unbustable. After all the kids had had AT LEAST three tries a piece, I let my husband have at it. It took him about twenty whacks (resulting in only one shattered overhead lightbulb) before our wolf-pony gave up the goods.

Never. Gonna. Happen.

Moroccan Wedding

What a gorgeous, cool and exotic wedding. Violet, my sweet client, married David on 11.11.11. The only thing more memorable than their wedding date was their spectacular venue; the Hotel Figueroa in Los Angeles. This cool boutique hotel is a Moroccan fantasy. Dark, moody and romantic, it had all the glam and drama any bride could hope for. And Violet made my job of setting up her dessert buffet that much easier by supplying 90% of the sweets herself from the fabulous Porto's Bakery. Oh, Sugar! did the table design, cake pops and of course, sugar cookies. Take a look at these gorgeous photos generously shared by Ben Gibbs of Ben Gibbs Photography. Enjoy!

I love a bride who's willing to have a little fun. Violet wanted to incorporate some meaningful touches about the groom and herself into the table, which we accomplished through our sugar cookies. There was a large platter of cookies with the Hand of Fatima, tying in their Moroccan theme. And for the bride, Violet requested some Hello Kitty cookies, her signature red bow changed to purple to coordinate with her color scheme.

And for the groom, we did a plate full of KISS cookies. No, not romantic, lovey-dovey XOXO cookies. KISS as in the glam rock band. This is when I fell in love with Violet. I think the more a wedding reflects the couple's personality the better. And I'd say mission accomplished because as I was setting up, the bride's good friend took one look at the cookies and laughed, "That's SO Violet!"

And now for a behind the scene laugh. The KISS face cookies were so labor intensive I only made two of each. I created two dozen more of these KISS logo cookies with a cool ombre effect using sanding sugar. The bride saw the cookies and loved them. The groom saw them and told the bride she'd jumped the shark and maybe we needed to reel it in a little bit on the dessert table. Violet sweetly let me know to go ahead and put the face cookies on the table, but they'd be taking the rest of the KISS cookies "to go." No offense taken!

This was a last minute collection put together for a charity auction at the Long Beach Aquarium. I finally wised up and saved myself some time and heartache by doing these nautical themed cookies in all white and I kinda love how clean and elegant they turned out (not to mention what a time saver it was by not having to mix a bunch of different colors). Enjoy!

Ballerina Birthday

Call it kismet or fate or "The Secret" - but man, if I didn't just tell my girlfriend, "I'd love to do a ballerina party" and my phone rings with a request for that very thing! This party was so sweet and girly and I loved every bit of it. Drew, the birthday girl, was turning five and LOVES all things ballerina. The gracious hostess was so easy to work with and had lots of great ideas. She even hired a real life ballerina to come and entertain! So much fun!

As for my part, we were in charge of the dessert table, birthday cake and favors. Where to begin with such a sweet theme? Downtown LA, natch. I braved the fabric district for the first time and scored three 40 yard rolls of pink tulle for just $36. Totally worth the drive! Now what to do with all the fluffy-floofy stuff? First up - this darling tutu-inspired wreath for the front door to welcome the guests. I spray painted Baby Sugar's black ballet slippers pink to hang from satin ribbon - and voila!

The next project for all of that tulle was a table skirt. Miles and miles of it went into this project, but it was super simple. Just one long length of ribbon and yards of tulle cut to table height. Tie tulle strips to the ribbon in a single knot, string together, and BOOM - tutu table skirt.

Teeny Tiny Halloweenies

How? How did what started with me volunteering to bake seven (SEVEN) plain sugar cookies for a project at Baby Sugar's preschool Halloween party result in over THREE HUNDRED COOKIES? I think I have some sort of cookie dismorphic disorder. It all started out with these plain gigantic pumpkin cookies. Then I added the facial features so the kids could do a little mix and matcheroo. Seemed innocent enough...

Then I thought I should make the kiddos in her class a little take home Halloween treat. Oh, and something for her teacher. And the teacher's aid. Oops - don't forget the nice lady who runs the school. Maybe I'll bake them each a nice spooky cookie. Nothing crazy. OOOOOR I could bake them each over a dozen mini cookies, package them in small mason jars all tied up pretty with an orange satin bow. Yeah! That's what I'll do! And there you have it. The Cookies That Tried to Kill Me

Ever take on a project and think WHY? Why did I agree to this? Well this is that project. And only because it took so freaking long. This was an order for wedding favors - Ten dozen of them. I thought it would take three days max. WRONG! Five days later and they were finally finished - right down to the wire! No matter the late nights and impending carpal tunnel, I love these wedding cookies because they're personalized from the dress, hairstyle and bouquet down to the groom's boutonniere and tie color and are such a great little personal memento from happy couple's big day. Enjoy!

Autumn Wedding Spread

Over. The. Top. This dessert table was for an insanely gorgeous wedding held at the Monaco Mansion in Santiago Canyon. The only guidelines were that it be elegant and autumn inspired. But not the acorns-fall-leaves-and-cornucpoias kind of autumn. Just the palette should be fall inspired using chocolate brown, champagne, deep burgundy and a hint of orange. Pajama Party

What a fun birthday party idea! My client wanted a slumber party themed dessert table for her little girl. But the party was during the day and no one was sleeping over. Hmm... That one was a head scratcher. Basically the kiddos were coming over in their jammies to enjoy some morning-after breakfast-themed treats. The hostess really wanted a parfait bar, as it's one treat her little one enjoys. She also requested a "cereal bar" and the rest was left to my imagination. The birthday girl, Sofia, is really into Curious George so the hostess requested we incorporate him into the dessert table somehow. I lucked out and used my little one's "Curious George and the Birthday Surprise" book propped against a sweet pink and white striped pillow at the head of the "bed." She also wanted one of our Bedtime Story Sugar Cookies to stand out and be special just for Sofia, so we did a lone Curious George cookie amongst a plateful of Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" inspired ones.

Our breakfast inspired birthday cake is maybe one of my all time favorite Oh, Sugar! creations. The birthday girl specifically wanted her cake topped with a stack of flapjacks and the rest was up to us. Well, no way could I resist making bacon-shaped cookies to spell out Sofia's name, and I finally got to use the random gummy fried eggs I found at TJ Maxx awhile ago. (I KNEW I'd find a use for them!)

Coolest. Bride. Ever. We did a scaled down, last-minute dessert spread for a bride who wanted to give her hard core party guests a late night sweet treat. Along with some jumbo s'mores on a stick, Oreo truffles and Rice Krispie pops, we did this plate of Star Wars themed sugar cookies to surprise her new groom. I was trying to come up with a great tag line for these but I'll I could think of was "May "divorce" be with you!" Didn't seem quite appropriate at a wedding. Oh, well. Enjoy!
